A people-centric transformation

At the core of People Sustainability is the well-being of our employees. We want to make sure they are valued for their contribution to our success. Our People Sustainability Pyramid sets the course for our people-centric transformation.

We want all of our people measures to put human needs at their core. This means every action we take, every day, should take into account their impact on all people who interact with Beckers – whether  employees, customers or others. Only by considering this impact can we build a solid foundation for a people-centric business.

In 2021, we held several workshops to review our progress in People Sustainability.  For Beckers, this means treating our employees – or anyone who connects with Beckers – in a sustainable and responsible manner. In our workshops, we developed a way to put this into action – the Beckers People Pyramid.

The People Pyramid is built on the “hierarchy of needs,” a theory developed by the American psychologist Abraham Maslow. This motivational theory lays out the needs required for human well-being, which leads to self-actualization. We took it as a foundation and translated it to reflect our own values. The idea is for the entire company to take a journey towards sustainability, connected through the different layers of this approach to people-centric transformation. Each layer (see picture) addresses the fundamental needs of the people who interact with Beckers every day.

Built into this pyramid are indicators and specific actions that help us ensure we are achieving our goals. For example, through our engagement survey on working conditions, we can regularly verify our progress – from physiological and safety to love and belonging. The survey, along with regular employee check-ins and exit interviews help us identify where corrective action is needed. Our Code of Conduct report helps flag incidents reported by colleagues, so we can monitor and address issues more easily.

“We have identified three areas in which we would like to be world-class: purpose-driven organization, diversity, equity and inclusion as well as team spirit.”

Judith Jungmann | Chief Human Resources Officer

The journey begins with the respect of universal human rights, continues with the physiological and health and safety needs, and includes the mental well-being of our employees. In parallel to Maslow’s pyramid, our Beckers pyramid addresses diversity and inclusion and our employees’ need to develop – both in their professional and personal life. At the top of the pyramid, where we reach self-actualization, is our social engagement – caring for others and pioneering for sustainability.
